Africa Food Systems Summit 2025

The Africa Food Systems Forum 2025 annual summit will take place from 31st August to 5th September in Dakar, Senegal. It will be held under the theme “Leading Collaboration, Innovation, and the Implementation of Agri-Food Systems Transformation”.

With only five years left to reach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and one year away from the Malabo Declaration’s deadline, transforming African food systems stands as a paramount task, crucial for ensuring food security and fostering job opportunities particularly for youth and women on the continent.

Africa Day for Food and Nutrition Security

Africa Day for Food and Nutrition Security is commemorated annually by the African Union to raise awareness of food insecurity and malnutrition in Africa and to mobilise resources and commitments to end hunger.

In 2025, the 16th commemoration will take place in Kigali, Rwanda, together with the 21st CAADP Partnership Platform. The event aims to accelerate progress towards the Malabo Declaration goal of ending hunger by 2025, while improving nutrition and health outcomes across the continent.

European Union-African Union summit

The leaders of the European Union (EU) member states and the countries of the African Union (AU) will meet in Luanda, Angola for the seventh EU-African Union summit. This multilateral summit will be co-chaired by the President of Angola, João Lourenço, and the President of the European Council, António Costa.

The Summit will build on the outcomes of the recent EU-AU Ministerial held in Brussels in May 2025, where ministers reaffirmed their commitment to closer ties between the two continents, guided by shared values, mutual interests and a joint vision for sustainable growth and stability.

Marking 25 years of EU-AU partnership, the Summit comes at a pivotal time as Angola holds the rotating African Union presidency. Leaders will focus on strengthening cooperation in key areas such as peace and security, economic integration, trade, multilateralism, green development, digitalisation, migration, mobility and human development.

Traditional Foods for the Future - Academic symposium and stakeholder workshop

Many local traditional foods exist that are part of local culture and tradition. They are usually well suited to local agronomic practices and informal value chains and, have great potential to promote nutrition and livelihoods. However, due to specific characteristics of each of these foods and the focus on globally available alternatives, local traditional foods have been understudied. This has hampered their use to promote nutrition and livelihoods within the local context of many LMIC.
To promote traditional foods, a symposium will be organised, specifically focusing on local traditional (fermented) foods in Southern Africa.
